In getting its EVs to market, it didn’t have to contend with labor unions, out-of-date assembly plants, engineering an EV around existing platforms and models, and so on. Every penny spent, every person hired, every bit of research, and every drop of expended energy has been to bring its R1T (truck) and R1S (SUV) to market. But I don’t think the onset of more direct competitors will dull the Rivian’s shine. Its combination of on-road performance, off-road capability, and thoughtful design is remarkable, and as a first effort from a new automaker, it’s even more impressive. More R1 variants and updates — both hardware and software — will be rolled out in the coming months, and Rivian is currently working on new, more affordable model lines that will be built in Georgia.
Both vehicles offer 3 rows of seating, but InsideEVs estimates that the R1S is slightly more roomier, given that its roofline does not slope like the Model X. Rivian (RIVN) no longer expects to build as many vehicles this year as it did in 2023. After third-quarter deliveries fell, Rivian lowered its EV production plans for 2024. The R1T pickup is scheduled to be the first Rivian consumer EV to deliver for the company, and much hype has already surrounded it. This five seat, fully electric pickup offers some unique and exciting features centered around the outdoors, along with some unique exterior color choices. But it has struggled to find buyers for the Air, with its own CEO Peter Rawlinson publicly admitting to failures on the marketing side. It’s only shipped around 12,000 cars to date, at least as of the end of the first quarter of this year.

Rivian (RIVN) takes a big step toward restarting Georgia EV plant construction for R2
Established in 2007 and funded in 2008 in its original form, the ATVM loan program has funded several significant projects. A loan to Tesla helped the automaker rfp software development get production of the Model S underway, while Nissan used an ATVM loan to establish Leaf production in the U.S. The pace of loans, which can also go to other green-technology projects than EVs, has slowed considerably since then, and may stop completely with the incoming Trump administration. It features Driving Assist, which is driver-assistance technology that allows the EV to accelerate, steer, and brake itself in certain conditions with driver supervision. At least the R1S is well insulated and quiet at highway speeds despite the chunky tires; only a small amount of wind noise enters the cabin. All of it works fairly well, though the Highway Assist function that handles steering, acceleration, and review the research driven investor braking on select freeways can be overly sensitive. Parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system are standard, but the image quality is some of the worst on the market. By rotating the two wheels on one side in the opposite direction of the two wheels on the other side, the vehicle can spin 360 degrees without moving forward or backward. Touting pretty respectable maximum towing and payload numbers, the R1 EVs are no slouches regarding work. The R1T can tow up to 11,000 pounds and haul up to 1,700 to 1,800 pounds of people and cargo. It has a maximum towing limit of 7,700 pounds and a maximum payload of roughly that of the R1T. With the 2-motor AWD, the R1T range increases by 6 miles per charge and the R1S by 4 miles per charge. The second night at our cabin, I plug the R1S into a regular wall outlet using the included weatherproof charge cable; left to charge in below-freezing temperatures in the snow and sleet, the R1S gained 20 miles overnight.
With this feat, Rivian has become the first electric pickup maker, beating the likes of Tesla, Ford, and others to the finish line.
